I do not call you to die for the homeland. I call you to live for the homeland. To live for the homeland is not to be afraid of dying for it...

The Fifth Season...

"Beshinchi fasl" – 1977, Tashkent

Muhammad Salih’s first book, ‘Beshinchi Fasl’ (‘The fifth season’), was issued in 1997. It seriously puzzled literary critics. Initially, there have been favourable comments for the book. But after the warnings by the republic’s main ideologist "on the destructive influence of the West into the poetry", the new phase began in Salih’s fate – the phase of poet’s life forgotten by the socialist society. From then till the beginning of 90th, he had been called as "the Westernist poet far from the national traditions". Though this stage was romantic one, as none of the poets has been interviewed in the sells of KGB for his/her poems, as none of the poets has been imprisoned for preserving of novels written by Cholpan (the prominent Uzbek poet who has been repressed by Stalin’s regime in 1930th). Even then Salih managed to print his books, including the one which begins with the following poem:

Late spring

Nobody writes poems today,
Buds stuck in throats of twig.
Hearts - weightless knot in chest,
And Clouds lead blind sun.

Puzzled in fallen circumstances,
Trees stare at each other.
As guests who came from far away
Whom no one met at platform.

Why the poet has still not written his poem?
Why the bud has still not separated from the twig?
Why the crane has still not unrolled his wings?
Is it not possible after winter

To say "Salam!" to no one

Enough, we won’t be waiting anymore,
Poet, write you poem immediately!
And you- buds - come quickly out from the throats of twig!
Say your words for today, today!

We need the season of year,
Let it be even if its the fifth one!

1975

And ends with the following poem:

The last chance
I become suddenly happy for an idea
that I always have an option
for the benefit of freedom:

and for an idea
that I will never cheat anyone
that poetry is the love of person, who loves freedom!
I am happy that I have an option
to break my pencil any time for the sake of struggle for freedom!

1975

Muhammad Salih has done the same thing as it is mentioned in the poem. He broke his pencil after exactly ten years. From the beginning of 1985, we see Salih as a columnist rising sharp social and national issues of his country.

‘Oq Ko’ylaklar’, 1980, Tashkent.

Muhammad Salih’s second book was published in 1980. Salih has already became a well-known young poet graduated from the High Literary Courses in Moscow and became the leader of poetic clan which was called "metaphorists".

The book begins with the following poem:

I live by defeating my own words.
This is my job, my profession to defeat my own words.
Words are in full stomach,
Words are in empty minds
Words are narrow- minded.
If you also want to defeat, I can tell you:

If you want to defeat them, pronounce them.
To delight from non-pronouncing.
To delight from patience in front of speaking temptation
As of those pronounced words
Those are words who defeated me.

1978

Another poem from ‘Oq Ko’ylaklar’:

" What else do you want?
What are you looking for?
Agree, at the end, with this life!"
For a long time, I look at that life,
which is shown by my friends,
which smells as a perfumery,
I stare for a long time...
And don’t agree"

1997

"Quduqdagi oy " , 1980, Tashkent

In 1980, the printing house ‘Yosh Gvardiya’, published Salih’s third book under the title of ‘Quduqdagi Oy’ (‘Moon in the Well’).

Well known poet Rauf Parfi is the author of its foreword: ‘Salih strictly follows his words. His every word has got its etymology, colour, taste and, of course, weight full of meanings...

The people’s saying, ‘the expressed word is fired shot’, appropriates with Salih’s poetry...

As of his poetic research, one should not see them in Europism. For the sources of inspiration one has to look for the ancient Turkic scripts and and mother poetry. In poetry, he follows his own paths.."

The book begins with ironical poem:

What’s the East?
When earth is generous, you seat and flowers develop,
Even of you not, they flourish!

That is not the West,
where everyone writes poems on them tirelessly
that is our beloved East!

If rhyme is old as earth,
If moon can’t be saved from us - poets,
And if it does not look funny to anyone,
Than that is, of course, not the West, that our beloved East!

1974

Another poem from the book ‘Moon in the Well’:

The haze…
Whinging…
The weather is frozen…
The haze is whispering with someone.
The haze is preparing provocation with someone.
Something collapsing soundlessly,
Something breaking without sound.
The environment tearing in shackles.
Streets
Hide
their names.

Letter from Mamadali MakhmudovIn two months, I lost 24 kilograms. Then, apparently under pressure from the international community and my relatives' rallying to my cause, I was transported to Navoi . In the train on the way to Navoi, a young boy named Abdulkarim died, and I held him/supported him . We traveled from Jaslyk to Navoi in a Black Maria, a closed car... more... >>>

America's Shady Ally Against TerrorNew York Times: Uzbekistan is located in the very center of a highly explosive and densely populated region where almost 60 million people live, more than a third of them in Uzbekistan itself. The Karimov government's example of repression is likely to be infectious in a neighborhood of states that have little tradition of democracy or human rights... more... >>>

That Bitter Word “Freedom”When the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991 and Uzbekistan received its freedom, the balance of influence of the nobility and slaves was standard for the Soviet Union. But over time the proportion has shifted in favor of the slaves. Slaves turned up everywhere, from the government through to the opposition. That middle class, those who embodied the link between slaves and idealists...more... >>>

"Turkish Daily News"Muhammad Salikh: They talk about the globalization of terrorism, globalization of the struggle against terrorism, globalization of whatever. OK, that's fine. Why, then, in this world where we are all doomed to globalize, is there not a globalization of mutual understanding among peoples and races?... more... >>>

It is not a metaphor but realityKarimov constantly keeps saying that there is rest and peace in Uzbekistan, and there is no war. It is the truth. There are no wars in prisons, but of course there is dead silence in there. The only things that break this silence are groans of tortured prisoners. Karimov has been ruling Uzbekistan for more than 13 years. The new generation - generation of prison already has appeared... more... >>>
